Making Brushes is Easy!

Please read the terms of service before attempting this tutorial

Brush making and collecting can be quite addictive, just like any other aspect of PSP. You can find tons of free brushes all across the web or you can make your own.  They can be made from just about anything including text, preset shapes, even scanned images. But there are four important concepts to keep in mind when creating brushes.

Let's get started
*Please note: If clickable images do not open properly, please try again

  1. Open new image 250x250. White background. Remember, brushes can be no larger than this, but they may be smaller.
  2. Set foreground color to nil and background color to black or any shade of grey.  The darker the shade the darker the brush color will be.   The lighter the shade the lighter the brush color.  Choose the text tool and apply some text with floating checked.
  3. If using text keep it selected and skip to step 5.  If using another object go to step 4.
  4. Select none (Crtl+D). Click on the rectangluar selection tool and select the area around the object. Keep the selection close to the text or placement on an image will not be precise enough.

  1. When the dialog box comes up click on create.  Your brush should now be in the window. At this point you can create more brushes in the same manner, but for the sake of this tutorial we are going to stop here and name our brush.
  2. By default when you create a brush it is stored in a file called Ubrush.jbr.  Until you rename this file every brush you create will go into it. If you are not careful before you know it you may have fifty brushes in that one file! So let's rename it.  Open up windows explorer (or whatever you use to look into your folders) and navigate to the folder where your brushes are stored.  If you have not changed your PSP preferences they should be in your drive/program files/Jasc/Paint Shop Pro/brushes. Locate the Ubrush.jbr file, right click on it and choose rename. Rename it to anything you want.  Now when you create another brush it will be stored in the Ubrush.jbr file again and you just repeat this renaming process.

Having too many brushes in one file can sometimes crash PSP. It is a good idea to organize your brushes in some way to prevent this.  Also, if you are like me you don't want to have to scroll down through hundreds to find the one you want.
