This is a quick tutorial that will help you get started making and saving your unique Blade Pro presets.   The principles learned here will apply to Super Blade Pro as well.   You can use Blade Pro presets with SBP, but you may need to change the .q9q file extention to .q5q.   This tutorial is written for Windows machines, if you are on a Mac you will have to make adjustments.

This is the Blade Pro interface.   For the purpose of this tutorial we will only concentrate on the buttons that are numbered as they are the most important ones.   The SBP interface is slightly different but these buttons are the same in both.   If you want to play with the sliders to see what the do go ahead!

  1. Open a new image any size any background color and add a new raster layer.
  2. Always start your preset with a white base, so set your foreground color to white and background color to nil.   Get the text tool and add some text as floating using a wide font such as Impact.   Blade Pro must be used with a selection otherwise the entire layer will have the preset applied to it and that's not usually what we want!
  3. Bring up Blade Pro.

Now let's examine the interface.

  1. Press button number 4.   Locate bptutorial.q9q and press open.   You should see the preset I use in the above image in the preview pane.   Don't click ok yet.
  2. Ok so let's change the preset a little.   Click on button 3 (the dice) a few times until you find a preset that you like.   At this point I should tell you that if you find one you like you better save it immediately because it is highly unlikely that BP will repeat the exact settings.   That being said..
  3. Click button number 5 to save it.   Name your new preset bptutorial2.q9q.   It will automatically save into the folder where you loaded the last preset, in your case, the Environments and Texture folder.   You can save the preset where ever you wish.   I have my presets sorted by colors in subfolders of the environments and texture folder, it's just a matter of pointing BP to the folders when ready to load one.   This is my bptutorial2.q9q preset that I just created:

  1. By clicking on buttons 1 and 2 you can change the .bmp images used in the preset.   But since I have had BP for many years and have made my own .bmp and gathered a few from the web I can't tell you which ones to load so just play with these.
  2. Now load a different preset by pressing button number 4.   You will notice that the .bmp changes.   But how do you know which .bmp are used in the preset?
  3. Bring up Windows explorer and navigate to your Environments and Textures folder.   Locate the bptutorial.q9q file double click on it to open it in Notepad.   You should see something like the below image. The names of the .bmp used in the preset are highlighted, the rest is code that BP uses.
  1. It is not uncommon for BP to use one .bmp for both buttons 1 and 2 so you may only find one listed twice in Notepad.   Example:

  1. If you want to share your preset with others the best way to do it is to zip it up.   You must include the .q9q file and the .bmp image(s).   Don't know how to make a Winzip Archive? then go HERE to learn.

And that is all there is to making your own presets.   You can make your own .bmps and use them or you can use the ones that came with BP or use ones that others have made.   If you use the ones that others have made and distribute your presets make sure you give credit where credit is due! Just remember to save the ones you like immediately or they will be lost forever!
