Let's get started

This is a two part tutorial. If you already know how to mat an image skip to the framing section.

Matting

  1. Open your image and set your background to a color that suits the image.  I chose #6C3344. Then go to image/add border and select 10 for all values.
  2. Select the magic wand and click on the border you just created to select it. At this point you can get quite creative by using the reflection effects (try it!) but for this simple tutorial we are just going to add a drop shadow to give the border some depth.
  3. Go to effects/3D effects/drop shadow and add a drop shadow with 2 in both horizontal and vertical, 100 opacity, blur 6.2.
  4. Add another drop shadow but change the vertical and horizontal values to -2.
And there you have a simple mat. Now merge layers and save. Minimize this for later use.

Framing

  1. Open the image you saved to your harddrive earlier.  Then edit/copy (crtl+c). Close the image since you won't need it any more.
  2. Open a new image 600 x 550 white background. Select all. Then go to edit/paste into selection (shift+ctrl+L) and paste it.
  3. Go to selections/modify/contact by 25. Then selections/invert. This will select the outside 25 pixels.
  4. Now go to effects/artistic effects/brush strokes and apply the following settings:

  1. Apply another outer bevel but change the direction to 315.

Now let's save it as a frame

  1. Go to file/save-as then navigate to PSP 7 program files/Jasc/Paint shop Pro then open up the frames folder. Give the frame a name and manually type in the extention of .pfr (example: gfx_frame1.pfr) and in the drop down menu select Paint Shop Pro Image making sure that .pfr is listed there.  If you don't manually type in the .pfr extention your frame will be saved as a .psp file and will not work as a frame.
  2. Close the frame image you just created and open the image you saved earlier (the matted image). Go to image/picture frame and choose the one you just made from the drop down menu.  Choose one of the options (inside or out) then finish and Viola! You have a frame.
