This is another version of the Step Out! tutorial. This one is based on a Photoshop tutorial by hbomb. I do not claim this as my original idea, I just adapted it for use in PSP.
We will be doing the rooster, but the techniques are the same for any photo.
Resources- PSP 8 or 9.
- The rooster photo zip file HERE. Unzip it and open in PSP.
Let's get started
*Please note: If you install this tutorial as a quick guide you may get a script error when trying to view the images, just click "yes" at the prompt and the images will show properly. Don't know how to install quick guides? then check out the tutorial found HERE.- Open the rooster image. Ctrl+D to duplicate it and close the original.
- Add a new raster layer named "white" and flood fill
{match mode none, sample merged unchecked, blend normal, opacity 100] with white. Turn the visibility to this layer off. - Add a new raster layer named "frame".
- Get the rectangular selection tool
[add mode, feather 0, anti-alias checked] and make a medium sized rectangular selection. - Get the flood fill tool again and flood the selection with white.
- Go to Selections->Modify->Contact by 10. Hit the delete key. You should now have a frame.
- Select none (ctrl+D). Get the deform tool
and by holding the shift or ctrl key down, push the corner nodes until you shape the frame the way you like. - Click on the white layer to make it active. Lower the opacity to between 0-20.
- Get the lasso tool
[point to point, add mode, feather 1, smoothing 1, anti-alias checked] then zoom in about 300. Carefully go around the rooster's head. Make sure you are on the white layer then hit delete. Repeat for the tail. Once you have both the tail and head deleted, select none.

- Now activate the frame layer. Get the Magic Wand tool
[add mode, match mode color, tol 0, sample merged unchecked, feather 1, anti-alias checked, outside] and click inside the frame. Go to Selections->modify->Expand 2. - While still selected click on the white layer to activate it and hit delete. Select none.
- Turn off visibility to the white layer. Activate and lower the opacity of the frame layer to about 30. Get the lasso and select the parts of the frame that covers the rooster. Hit the delete key. Select none.
- Turn the opacity up to 100 on the white layer. Then activate the frame layer. Add a drop Shadow to your tastes so that the frame stands out like you want it.
And that's it! You can get some pretty neat photos with this technique depending on the angle of the frame, the drop shadow and the color of the background you choose. Play with it and see what you can come up with!
I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and found it useful easy to follow. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to .
