If you have reached this page without completing the porthole section of this tutorial, you will need to download the files necessary to do this animation.   You can download the porthole/fish.zip HERE.  Unzip them and open both in PSP.   Please read the terms of service before attempting this tutorial

Since this part of the tutorial requires you to merge layers and copy and paste a lot, the quickest and easiest way is to make a custom palette.   You can always delete it later.   So let's go ahead and make one.  You can skip this part if your workspace/palettes are ergonomically efficient and you are comfortable with them.

Making a Custom toolbar for this project
  1. Right click on any of your toolbars to bring up a flyout.   Choose "Customize".
  2. Click on the toolbars tab then on New.  Give your new toolbar any name you wish then click OK.
  3. Now click on the Commands tab and choose Edit in the categories window then scroll down and choose Copy in the commands window and drag it on to the newly created palette.   Then select paste as a new layer and drag it also.
  4. Next select Layers in the categories window and choose merge down and drag it to the palette.   Then select Close.

You toolbar should look like this .   That is all you need to do!   Just drag your new toolbar as close to your layers palette as possible to make for easy clicking.

The Animation

  1. Click on the portholes layer called "merged" then copy it by selecting the button on your toolbar.
  2. Activate the fish image and click on the Frame 1 layer.  Now paste it as a new layer by selecting the on the toolbar.  Your layer palette should look like this:
layer palette 2
  1. Now hit the merge down button on the toolbar.   Now your layer palette should look like this:
layer palette 3
  1. Click on the Frame 2 layer then hit the paste as a new layer button on the toolbar, then hit the merge down button.   Continue in this fashion until you have pasted the portholes on all 24 frames of the fish.
  2. Open Animation Shop.   Click File->new.   When the dialog box comes up enter width 500, height 250 (same size as your porthole image) transparent canvas color.
  3. Click on the paint bucket and flood fill the frame with #058BC9
  4. Go to effects->insert image effect and use these settings:

  1. Click on Frame 25 (F:25), the solid blue one, to select it then go to Edit->delete to get rid of it.
  2. Ctrl+A to select all the frames.   Now go to File->export frames->to Paint Shop Pro.
  3. Click on Frame 1 layer of the porthole image, hit the copy button on the toolbar then click on Frame 1 layer of the water image and hit the paste as a new layer button then hit the merge down button.
  4. Click on the Frame 2 of the porthole image and repeat the above step.   Continue this procedure until all 24 frames are copied, pasted and merged.   Always remember to paste the porthole image onto the water and do it frame number to frame number (distractions can be a booger! lol).
  5. Once you have completed all layers (frames) close the water image (now the whole thing) by clicking on the red X.   When it asks you to save click no. Then when it asks would you like to update the changes back to Animation Shop click yes.
When Animation Shop pops back up you can:
a.   View the animation by going to View->animation
b.   Resize the animation by going to Animation->resize animation and resizing it to your tastes.
c.  Saving it by going to File->save.   I like to use the default settings here, but you may use your favorite.

I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial and found it easy to follow.  If you would like me to explain how to put the name on or if you have any comments or questions please feel free to .
