Installing Quick Guides
Please read the terms of service before attempting this tutorial
For years I added every tutorial to my favorites folder thinking that I would do them later. Many times when I went back to actually do the tutorial the website would no longer be there. Dummy me didn't know that in most cases webpages could be saved to my hard drive for offline viewing simply by going to file/save as! If you have ever done a tutorial online you know what a hassle it is to flip back and forth between the page and PSP. Countless times I have forgotten what I was suppose to do and had to flip back. Well, PSP 8 has solved that problem! Now tutorials can be opened in PSP by using Quick Guides. This tutorial will show you how to install tutorials as quick guides to make your learning experience a whole lot easier.
Resources- PSP 8 or 9. You can download a demo of v9 HERE.
- Spiral Background tutorial found HERE. Or you may use a tutorial of your choice. (Make sure it opens in a new window)
Let's get started
- Open Windows Explorer (or whatever you use) and navigate to your My PSP8 Files folder/Quick Guides. If you have not changed your default location setup when you installed PSP they should be located in the My Documents folder.
- Add a new folder within the Quick Guides folder and call it "backgrounds". This can be considered a heading folder. To keep things organized, I give these folders meaningful names such as backgrounds, text effects, etc.
- Now add a new folder within the backgrounds folder. Name this folder "Spiral bg". This folder can be considered the tutorial folder. You will add a new folder for every tutorial you want as a guide within a heading folder. However, you will not need to add any other heading folders unless you want to.
- Now bring up the spiral background tutorial webpage and go to file/save as and in the Save as type option choose Web Page, complete (*.htm;*.html) and save this page in the "spiral bg" folder you just created.

Click for larger version
Once you have saved it your folder tree should look something like this:

- Go into the folder that is highlighted above and find the .html file (there should only be one). Rename this file to "index.htm" Please note: if your file extensions are hidden then you will not need to manually type in .html. You will receive a Rename Warning telling you that if you rename it the file will no longer belong to the folder. Just ignore the warning and click ok anyway.
- Open PSP 8. If your Learning Center is hidden, go to Help/Learning Center to bring up the Quick Guides.
- Click the
then on
and your background folder should now show. Open it up and you will see Spiral bg. Click on Spiral bg and the tutorial will show in the learning center. Please note: Since I have used a javascript to enlarge the images you may receive a script error, if you do just click on yes and the images will be displayed. You can expand the window to fit the images by pulling the sides, or you can just use the scroll bar at the bottom. Once you view the images click on the back arrow to return to the tutorial.
If you have a muli-page tutorial you will need to create a tutorial folder within a heading folder for each page of the tutorial you wish to add as a guide.
Let's Review
- create a heading folder (or use one already there)
- create a tutorial folder within the heading folder for each page of the tutorial
- save the webpage into the tutorial folder
- reaname the .html file to index(.htm)
- refresh the Learning Center in PSP
That's all there is to it! I hope you have learned something from this tutorial and found it easy to follow. If you have any comments or questions please feel free to .
